Tebe Dance, A Wonderful Dance from East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

The Tebe dance is a dance that originated in Belu,Timor island, East Nusa Tenggara. Tebe itself means Tandak. Tandak is a Ronggeng dance or Ronggeng dancers.

In ancient times, this dance was implemented when the Meo came home from the battlefield carrying the head of the enemy, then sticked it in the middle and they encircled it all night long until 3 or 4 days.

If a group of people do the Tebe dance, it is a sign of the presence of a surge of excitement over success/victory where the men and women will each other holding hands, singing and chanting the poem that contains the praise, criticism or solicitation, and enjoying the rhythm of the song. A group of female dancers usually form a circle outside and a group of men form the inner circle. If there’s getting crowded, they usually would be more spirit to perform the dance.

They also do this when there are marriage festivities, church events, cooling the traditional house (Pemali House), rice stepping events.

So, the Tebe dance will only be done if there is happiness. But if there’s an anniversary of the death, etc., then there will be no Tebe dancebecause it does not fit to the philosophy or the meaning of the dance of Tebe itself i.e. as a surge of excitement.

The Tebe dance is really enjoyable and fun, especially when doing it together with many people and shouting the words "aaaaa!", and it soooo wonderful. Usually, after having meal, the event will be followed by Tebe dance . This dance would be going all night long.

Whoever you are, you can perform this Tebe dance. Because while performing, all kind of people, a child, adolescent, adult, elderly, poor, rich, etc will all be gathered together holding hands to form a circle with no limits holders. We would normally be easy to meet happy faces because that's when they get to express their excitement.
